Chinese Culture in the Age of AI and Ink Thinking

I recently had the distinct honor of participating in an interview with CGTN Radio, as part of a special segment commemorating UN Chinese Language Day on April 20, 2026. This was an invaluable opportunity for me to share my insights on the growing role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in our lives, particularly in two areas where I see immense potential: translation and language learning. During this interview, which commenced around the 5:03 mark of the broadcast, I focused on how modern technology can serve as a bridge connecting ancient linguistic traditions with our digital future, and how "ink and algorithms" have become an integral part of our cognitive journey.

My Personal Experience: AI as an Indispensable Learning Assistant

Through my personal experience and observations, I believe that AI has transcended its role as a mere technical tool to become a ubiquitous "personal assistant." This assistant provides invaluable support in the language learning process, a point I emphasized during my discussion. The significance of AI in learning is evident through several key aspects:

  • Instant Access and Flexible Learning: AI has empowered me, and countless others, with the ability to check sentences, practice simple conversations, and even correct linguistic errors anytime, anywhere. This breaks down traditional learning barriers, making the process more flexible and accessible. Instead of waiting for a teacher or peer, I can receive immediate feedback, which significantly accelerates the pace of self directed learning. This immediate feedback loop is crucial for reinforcing correct usage and quickly identifying areas for improvement.

  • Advanced Grammar and Vocabulary Analysis: Smart tools powered by AI have become indispensable for extracting keywords from complex texts, clarifying subtle grammatical nuances, and even refining pronunciation through advanced speech recognition technologies. This deep analytical capability helps learners grasp the structure of a language more effectively and overcome common linguistic challenges. For instance, AI can highlight specific grammatical patterns or suggest more appropriate vocabulary choices based on context, thereby enhancing comprehension and expression.

  • Personalized Educational Content: What truly distinguishes AI is its capacity to generate tailored reading materials, translate books, and create flashcards that perfectly match a learner's individual level and specific needs. This personalization makes the learning process more engaging and efficient, as content is presented in a manner that aligns with my learning style, thereby enhancing my retention of information. This adaptive learning approach ensures that the content is neither too challenging nor too simplistic, maintaining optimal engagement.

AI and Translation: A Revolution in Global Communication

Translation is another field that has undergone a radical transformation thanks to AI. It is no longer a mere literal transfer of words; it has become a more intelligent and efficient process, as I highlighted in my talk. Machine translation, especially with the evolution of Large Language Models (LLMs), has achieved unprecedented levels of accuracy 1 .

  1. Increasing Accuracy and Efficiency: With continuous advancements in AI algorithms, the accuracy of machine translation has reached unparalleled levels, facilitating effective communication across diverse cultures and minimizing misunderstandings. This means I can rely more heavily on available tools to understand foreign texts or convey my thoughts to others quickly and efficiently. By 2025, real-time speech-to speech translation is expected to become even faster and more accurate 2 . This leap in accuracy is not just about word-for-word translation but also about capturing the semantic meaning and contextual nuances, making cross-cultural interactions smoother
  2. Simplifying and Organizing Complex Content: AI doesn't just translate; it also organizes key points and simplifies lengthy and complex content. This makes the comprehension and translation process more focused and clear, saving significant time and effort. For me, this translates to the ability to quickly absorb dense information, whether it's academic articles or technical documents, by having AI distill the core ideas. This capability is particularly beneficial in fields requiring rapid information processing
  3. Supporting Human Translators and Enhancing Productivity: It is crucial to emphasize that AI does not aim to replace human translators but rather serves as a powerful assistive tool. It boosts the productivity of professional translators, allowing them to concentrate on the more creative and cultural aspects of translation, such as understanding subtle meanings and cultural contexts. This collaboration between humans and machines opens new horizons for translation quality and speed 3 . The synergy between human intuition and AI's processing power leads to superior translation outcomes, where the machine handles the bulk work and the human refines for cultural appropriateness and stylistic elegance

The Limits of AI: The Human Spirit in Language

Despite all these benefits and remarkable progress, I underscored a fundamental point in the interview that cannot be overlooked: AI cannot replace the human spirit in language. Language is not merely a set of rules and data; it is a vessel for culture, humor, and deep human emotions. These aspects continue to pose a significant challenge for AI
  • Cultural Nuances and Idiomatic Expressions: AI still struggles to comprehend proverbs, sarcasm, jokes, and the profound meanings embedded within words that require deep cultural understanding. These subtleties are what give language its richness and beauty, demanding a human sensitivity that machines cannot fully replicate. The inability to grasp these nuances can lead to translations that are technically correct but culturally inappropriate or devoid of intended humor.
  • Emotional Connection and Authenticity: AI lacks the genuine emotions that make human interaction enjoyable, authentic, and meaningful. Interacting with humans adds an emotional and social dimension to the learning and translation process that machines cannot provide. This emotional aspect is what makes language learning a rich and rewarding experience, fostering empathy and deeper understanding between individuals

A Future Outlook: Language Learning as an Enjoyable Hobby

In conclusion, I believe that learning a language like Chinese is a "lifelong commitment" to a culture and its people. It is not merely about acquiring a skill but an exploratory journey of connection. With the advancement of AI, the process of language learning has become less of a technical necessity and more of an "enjoyable hobby" that helps us live a more connected and understanding life in the world around us. My interview with CGTN Radio served as a powerful reminder that technology exists to serve humanity and expand its horizons, but the "soul behind the words" and deep human connection will always remain uniquely human
